Spain & Portugal

29 August-9 September, 2014 — 11 nights, 12 days
Picture

Some of the most breathtaking scenery can be found in this part of Spain and Portugal and you will ride some of the best roads in Europe. The scenery of the mountains and sleepy villages from the Picos De Europa and across to Lisbon on the rugged Atlantic coast is varied and beautiful. We will visit spectacular gorges and mountains, beautiful National park lands and remote unspoilt medieval villages and towns. Many areas of Northern Spain & Portugal are mostly untouched by the hustle of today’s modern life and in many of the small sleepy villages you feel that time has passed them by. Accommodation is first class  as you stay in ancient castles, palaces and monasteries and the traditional menus each night are hard to beat – an amazing adventure and a chance to experience ‘real’ Spain & Portugal. You’ll have three nights in the seaside resort of Cascais.
This is a truly magnificent touring ride & holiday staying in luxury accommodation. Stunning roads with stress-free riding, a once in a lifetime trip you won’t forget.

Day 1. Friday August 29th. We depart from Portsmouth at 5.00pm on a 24 hour crossing to Santander. An inside, two berth cabin with en-suite facilities are included.

Day 2. Saturday August 30th. Santander to Cosgaya (approx. 75 miles)
We arrive at 5.30pm and enjoy an afternoon ride through the Deva Gorge and the Picos de Europa Montains to get to our hotel close to Potes. Dinner with wine is included tonight.

Day 3. Sunday August 31st. Cosgaya to Avila (approx. 215 miles)
High over the spectacular St. Gloria pass with its stunning mountain scenery and then onward south past Palencia to our first Parador the four-star Raimund de Borgoma in Avila, a former 16th century Palace. This ancient walled city was the focal point of the film "The Pride and the Passion" staring Frank Sinatra, Sopia Loren and Gary Grant. Dinner with wine is included tonight.

Day 4. Monday September 1st. Avila to Marvao (approx. 220 miles)
More fabulous back roads as we cross into Portugal and make to Marvao and our overnight stay at our first Pousada. Surrounded by 13th-century castle walls, this hilltop Pousada has been created from two village houses that still maintain their medieval character and at an altitude of almost 1000 metres has stunning 360º panoramic views over the rugged Alentejan plain. Dinner with wine is included tonight.

Day 5. Tuesday September 2nd. Marvao to Cascais (approx. 160 miles)
Today we make our way to the Atlantic coast across the plains until we reach Cascais, a former fishing village which gained it's fame as a resort for Portugal's royal family. The Cidadela de Cascais Pousada was formerly a fortress and then a residence for the royal family from 1871. This pretty seaside resort is only 18 miles from the Portuguese capital, Lisbon. Dinner with wine is included tonight.

Day 6. Wednesday September 3rd. Day off
Just relax by the pool and watch the sea, wander into town or explore nearby Lisbon. Tonight you are free to eat out.

Day 7. Thursday September 4th. Day off
Another lazy day to relax or maybe take a short ride to the old town of Sintra for lunch. Once again you are free to eat out tonight.

Day 8. Friday September 5th. Cascais to Crato (approx. 130 miles)
As we start our return journey we head northeast on more scenic back roads until we reach our castle accommodation in Crato where dinner with wine awaits.

Day 9. Saturday September 6th. Crato to Cuidad Rodrigo (approx. 150 miles)
More cross county roads and back into Spain. Tonight we stay at the 14th century four-star castle. This ancient town was embroiled in the Peninsular War against Napoleon and is steeped in history.

Day 10. Sunday September 7th. Cuidad Rodrigo to Cervera de Pisuerga (approx. 220 miles)
We continue north today and back into the stunning Picos de Europa Mountains where we started our journey. The hotel tonight is just outside the small town of Cervera de Pisuerga and is situated in the Fuentes Carrionas Nature Reserve in the foothills of the Picos de Europa. It is traditionally built and has magnificent views down to the water of the Ruesga reservoir. Dinner with wine for our final night is included.

Day 11. Monday September 8th. Cervera de Pisuerga to Santander (approx. 140 miles)
Today we return to Santander to catch the overnight ferry back to the UK. Ferry departs at 2.00pm

Day 12. Tuesday September 9th. Ferry arrives back in Portsmouth at 2.15pm
