ONLY 3 DOUBLE ROOMS REMAINING

New for 2016, this tour is all about the magnificent country roads, the beautiful Harz Mountains and the luxurious accommodation. We will visit the Ruhr and Eder Dams (known for the Dambsuters raid) and the iconic Harz Mountains which lie in old East Germany, once hidden behind the Iron Curtain. This area is also famous for its network of narrow gauge steam railways. There is a three night stay in Wernigerode, known as the “colourful town” of the Harz.

Day 1. Saturday July 23rd. Calais to Sint-Niklaas (approx. 130 miles)
After an early morning crossing from Dover to Calais we have a day of mainly toll-free motorway to crunch the miles and to get us to Sint-Niklaas on the outskirts of Antwerp. At our 4 star hotel, dinner with wine is included tonight.

Day 2. Sunday July 24th. Sint-Niklaas to Marienthal (approx.150 miles)
A short burst on the motorway to get around busy Antwerp before we pick up the quieter country roads to Lommel, our last town in Belgium. Onwards through Holland, past Eindhoven and then into Germany to the pretty town of Marienthal. Tonight’s hotel is a 4-star and dinner with wine is included.

Day 3. Monday July 25th. Marienthal to Edersee (approx. 150 miles)
Today we head to the Ruhr Valley and dams, stopping at Soest and then on to the Mohnessee Dam, a prime target for the 617 Dambusters Squadron. From here we continue on country roads through the Arnsberger Naturpark, heading east via Winterburg where the Lenne and Ruhr rivers meet. More great roads take us to our hotel for the night, an impressive, 4-star medieval castle hotel overlooking the Eder Dam and Edersee lake. Dinner with wine is included tonight.

Day 4. Tuesday July 26th. Edersee to Wernigerode (approx. 185 miles)
Our first stop of the day is a visit to the Dambusters Museum near to the Eder Dam and from here we head to the old East/West German border and into the beautiful Harz Mountains set mainly in the old GDR. Wernigerode is picturesquely situated on the Holtemme river, on the north slopes of the Harz Mountains and our traditional timber-framed, 4 -star hotel sits in the historic market square. This is our B&B base for the next three nights so we will be free to explore the town centre and eat out each night.

Day 5. Wednesday July 27th. Day off in Wernigerode
Day off to explore Wernigerode or take the opportunity to ride the famous narrow gauge railway with a trip up the Brocken Mountain which at 1,141 metres is the highest in the Harz range and in Northern Germany. Tonight we eat out.

Day 6. Thursday July 28th. Day off in Wernigerode or short ride-out (approx. 60 miles)
Another day to relax at the hotel or join the ride-out around the beautiful Harz region, enjoying the roads and scenery. On retuning to Weringrode we will, once again, be free to eat out.

Day 7. Friday July 29th. Wernigerode to Fulda (approx. 140 miles)
As we leave the Harz we ride south via Nordhausen and Eschwege, a lovely old town in the foothills of Mount Leuchtberg. From here we make our way to Fulda and our 4-star hotel. It is only short walk from the hotel to the city centre where we will be free to eat out in this pretty town.

Day 8. Saturday July 30th. Fulda to Konigswinter (approx. 160 miles)
Today we ride west as we take the scenic minor roads through the Vogelsberg Mountains – a large volcanic massif. We go via the pretty towns of Schotten and Laubach and continue west until we reach the Rhine which we then follow to our 4-star hotel which sits on the rivers’ edge. Dinner with wine is included again tonight.

Day 9. Sunday July 31st. Konigswinter to Dinant (approx. 160 miles)
This morning we cross the Rhine by ferry then continue west to Monshau – one of Germany’s finest towns. From here we cross into Belgium, stopping in Stavelot (near Spa) and on towards Dinant via the picturesque biker haunt of Durbuy. Our hotel tonight sits on the riverside in the town of Dinant where we will eat together at a restaurant nearby.

Day 10. Monday August 1st. Dinant to Calais (approx. 180 miles)
Our route today is part country back roads to France then motorway to Calais to catch a late afternoon ferry back to the UK

Total tour mileage approximately 1,300 (not including any mileage on days off)

We would just like to say that each of the trips we did with you were fantastic, we met some great new friends and caught up with some old ones as well. The variety of roads and the scenery made each trip unique and rewarding.
The whole season was well organised with great choices of hotels and locations. Looking forward to joining you again next year.
Our thanks to you and Caroline for her behind the scenes organisation.
