Our final tour for the year and a quick run to northern France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany to make the most of the autumn days before the nights finally close in for winter. This trip takes you to the scenic, heavily forested region of the Belgian Ardennes and into the area of Luxembourg known as Petite Suisse. On our visit to Germany we ride across the German Eiffel’s and down the river Mosel before our return journey through Belgium and the last night in France.
Day 1. Sunday September 29th. Calais to Arras (approx. 90 miles)
We start the day with a lovely ride along the old coast road with its views back across the channel towards the White Cliffs of Dover. We then cut inland and staying on the minor roads, make our way to Arras via picturesque country villages. The hotel is in the centre of Arras and only a few minutes’ walk from the historic Grand Place and Place de Heroes – the old town squares. Tonight dinner is included and we will eat out in a nearby restaurant. Day 2. Monday September 30th. Arras to Dinant (approx. 140 miles) This morning we leave Arras and head south and through the WWI battlefields of the Somme – including the trenches at Beaumont Hamel and the Thiepval Memorial to the British and South African fallen. Then onwards towards Belgium and Dinant, finishing the day with a run along the River Meuse until we reach our hotel on the riverside. Dinner with wine at a nearby restaurant is included tonight. Day 3. Tuesday October1st. Dinant to Vianden (approx. 100 miles) Off to Luxembourg through the forests and over the high hills of the Ardennes before stopping in St. Hubert, a famous hunting town. Then via Bastogne to Luxembourg and our hotel for the next two nights in Vianden. Overlooked by its hilltop castle and hidden away beneath the forested hills, Vianden stands on the river Our and was a frequent haunt of Victor Hugo. It is a charming town and not to be missed. Tonight you are free to eat out. Day 4. Wednesday October 2nd. Day off in Vianden or a ride out to Germany (approx. 130 miles) If you prefer, you can take the day off to explore Vianden and maybe take the ski lift to the hilltop overlooking the Castle or join a ride-out to Bernkastle-Kues, a quaint old German town which stands on the banks of the Mosel. After lunch in this quintessential town full of timber framed old buildings we follow the river Mosel until we reach Trier where we’ll visit the Harley dealership (if open). From here we head back to Vianden where you’ll be free to eat out. Day 5. Thursday October 3rd. Vianden to Chamouille (approx. 170 miles) We leave Luxembourg crossing the farmlands and forests of Belgium, leading to the rolling countryside of Picardy in northern France and to the final night’s stay at our lakeside hotel in this lovely region of Picardy. Tonight, dinner with wine is included. Day 6. Friday October 4th. Chamouille to Calais (approx. 150 miles) We take a cross country route back to Calais for an afternoon crossing to Dover.
