This tour takes you to the scenic, heavily forested region of the Belgian Ardennes and into the area of Luxembourg known as Petite Suisse. On our visit to Germany we ride across the German Eiffel’s and down the river Mosel before our return journey through Belgium and the last night in France.
Day 1. Tuesday 28th July. Calais to Dinant (approx. 195 miles)
We take an early morning ferry from Dover to Calais. To crunch some miles we have the first 80 on motorway until we reach Cambrai. From here it’s back roads to Belgium, following the River Meuse (famous as the river in the Battle of the Bulge) until we reach Dinant in the beautiful Ardennes. The hotel sits on the riverside in the centre of town and tonight you are free to eat out. Day 2. Wednesday 29th July. Dinant to Vianden (approx. 100 miles) Off to Luxembourg through the forests and over the high hills of the Ardennes before stopping in St. Hubert, a famous hunting town. Then via Bastogne to Luxembourg and our hotel for the next two nights in Vianden. Overlooked by its hilltop castle and hidden away beneath the forested hills, Vianden stands on the river Our and was a frequent haunt of Victor Hugo. It is a charming town and not to be missed. You are free to eat out tonight. Day 3. Thursday 30th July. Vianden to Trier (approx. 100 miles) This morning we leave Luxembourg via the beautiful hills and on sweeping roads as we head to Bitburg in Germany. We then make our way down the valley, past the vineyards to Bernkastel-Kues sitting on the edge of the River Mosel. The town is full of narrow streets and alleyways with pretty half-timbered houses, wine shops, cafes and restaurants. After lunch we follow the meandering Mosel to Trier. Trier is Germany’s oldest city and is known for its Roman gate and fortress entrance to the city, the “Porta Nigra”. You are once again free to eat out as the hotel is close to the centre and its bars and restaurants. Day 4. Friday 31st July. Trier & return (approx. 60 miles) Our first stop today will be the Trier Harley dealership and from here we pop back to Luxembourg for lunch at Larochette. This pretty town is overlooked by a ruined chateau sitting high on a rocky ridge. Our return to Trier is via Echternach on the river Sure and the German border. Once back in Trier you will be free to eat out again. Day 5. Saturday 1st August. Trier to Chamouille (approx. 180 miles) We leave Germany and cross the River Mosel into Luxembourg. We ride through the pretty area of Petite Swiss before we cross the farmlands and arrive back in France for our final night in the Picardy region and our stay in Chamouille. Our final dinner with wine is included tonight. Day 6. Sunday 2nd August. Chamouille to Calais (approx. 150 miles) We take a cross country route back to Calais for an afternoon crossing to Dover.
