Day 1. Tuesday May 17th. Portsmouth to Santander.
Ferry departs at 5.15pm for the 24 hour crossing and a two-berth cabin is included.

Day 2. Wednesday May 18th. Santander to Cervera de Pisuerga (approx. 80 miles)
Arriving in Santander at approximately 6.30pm, a main road route takes us to our first night’s hotel in time for dinner! We stay in the Parador de Cervera, Fuentes Carriones which overlooks a beautiful reservoir and is surrounded by the Picos de Europa Mountains. Dinner with wine is included tonight.

Day 3. Thursday May 19th. Cervera de Pisuerga to Zamora (approx. 150 miles)
With stops along the way we take the quiet back roads while enjoying the scenery which is so often missed by tourists and those stuck on the motorways! Tonight’s hotel, in the centre of medieval Zamora, is the 4-star Condes de Alba which was formerly a 15th century renaissance palace. The hotel has a swimming pool and dinner with wine is included.

Day 4. Friday May 20th. Zamora to Trujillo (approx. 195 miles)
Once again we follow the quiet, traffic-free back roads as we head west of Salamanca and south via Ledesma, Bejar and Plasencia…all sitting in the shadow of the Gredos Mountains. Tonight we stay in Trujillo which, according to some, is the most attractive town in the province of Extremadura. A classic conquistador town full of towers and castle walls. Our centrally located four-star hotel was formerly a 16th century convent and tonight we will be free to explore the town and have dinner in one of the many restaurants or tapas bars.

Day 5. Saturday May 21st. Trujillo to Seville (approx. 190 miles)
South again today, crossing the Guadiana River at Don Benita, then on to our two-night stay at a 4-star hotel in the centre of the “must see” city of Seville. The hotel has a roof top swimming pool and tonight we will be free to eat out.

Day 6. Sunday May 22nd. Day off in Seville
A full day to explore this wonderful city with its fabulous cathedral, Alcazar, parks, sites of historical interest, shops and restaurants.  Take a horse and carriage tour of the city before taking a leisurely wander around the old town for a relaxed tapas lunch. Tonight, we are free to eat out again so enjoy the buzz of the nightlife in the narrow streets, tapas bars and restaurants.

Day 7. Monday May 23rd. Seville to Zafra (approx. 130 miles)
Today we start our return journey as we head north on minor roads through the heart of the Aracena Mountains to Zafra and the 4-star Dukes de Feria hotel. The hotel was once a 15th century castle and dinner with wine is included.

Day 8. Tuesday May 24th. Zafra to Guadalupe (approx. 130 miles)
Fabulous roads again today as we go cross country to Guadalupe. Gorgeous scenery, forgotten sleepy villages and empty roads. The stunning old town of Guadalupe is hidden away in the Sierra de Guadalupe Mountains; it was an important pilgrimage centre and now a world heritage site. Our 4-star hotel tonight was originally a 15th century hospital run by the monks. Dinner with wine is included tonight.

Day 9. Wednesday May 25th. Guadalupe to Gredos (approx.125 miles)
We start the day on more great windy roads through the hills and olive groves and to the Gredos mountains and the Puerto del Pico pass at 1352 metres. Once over the pass we finish in the foothills of the Gredos Mountains surrounded by forests and magnificent scenery. Our hotel was once a royal hunting lodge. Dinner with wine is included tonight.

Day 10. Thursday May 26th. Gredos to Tordesillas (approx. 120 miles)
North today and past Candeleda, Arenas de San Pedro and Avila on the edge of the Guadarama mountains which surround Madrid. Our hotel, the 4-star Casa Solariega, sits on the outskirts of the town and has a swimming pool. Dinner with wine is included tonight.

Day 11. Friday May 27th. Tordesillas to Cosgaya (approx. 170 miles)
North again today, passing Valladolid and Palencia and finishing in the fabulous Picos de Europa Mountains. Mountain scenery and passes, lakes and sweeping roads until we arrive at our mountain lodge style hotel in the quiet village of Cosgaya. Dinner with wine is included tonight.

Day 12. Saturday May 28th. Cosgaya. Day off to relax
Take the day off and relax by the pool or take a ride out of approximately 120 miles to Covadonga. We’ll ride into the Gargantes mountain pass and on to Covadonga, widely believed to be where Christianity began in Spain and also the resting place and tomb of Pelayo, the first king of Spain. We head back to the hotel in time for dinner.

Day 13. Sunday May 29th.  Cosgaya to Sardinero (approx. 75 miles)
This morning we run through the impressive Deva gorge before taking the coast road to Sardinero and our 4-star hotel close to the beach. This finishes the tour and we will have ridden more back roads, seen more countryside, villages, towns and views of “real” Spain than most tourists see in a lifetime.  Tonight dinner is not included so we will be free to eat out in town or along the beach front.

Day 14. Monday May 30th. Sardinero to Santander ferry (approx. 3 miles)
We have the morning to relax on the beach or have a quick run up to the Harley Dealer in Santander before heading to the ferry for 1.15pm to catch the return crossing which leaves at 3.15pm.

Day 15. Tuesday May 31st.
Arrive in Portsmouth around 2.15pm refreshed and ready for your onward journey home.

Total tour mileage approximately 1,365

Dave and I had probably one of the best holidays we have ever had. For us it ticked all the boxes. The scenery was breathtaking, the accommodation was fabulous, the food and wine that was on offer was very good and the fact that we could just enjoy the ride and not worry about map reading and where we were going to fuel up or where we were going to park etc. made it a really enjoyable experience, and one we can't wait to repeat!
Thanks again for a really wonderful holiday.
Dominique & David Pierson
