AUTHORISED HARLEY-DAVIDSON MOTORCYCLE TOURS AROUND EUROPE – SALZBURG AND FAAKER SEE BIKE WEEK
2-15 SEPTEMBER 2011

European Bike Week in our opinion is one of the best in the biking calendar and that’s why we take a tour there every year. We travel down via the Belgian Ardennes, the German Eiffels and Rhine valley to Salzburg in Austria, where we’ll have a two night stop in this historic city and time off to practice singing “The hills are alive...”! We return via Austrian ski resorts, the Black Forrest and the High Vosges. A real adventure on minor roads to a fantastic rally.
Rest assured that this trip promises interesting scenery, beautiful stops and places of interest, pretty villages, sleepy hamlets and not forgetting the great biking roads!

Faaker See

Day 1. Friday September 2. Calais to Dinant (approx. 190 miles).
Leaving Calais, to crunch some miles, we have the first 80 miles on motorway until we reach Cambrai and then its back roads to Belgium until we reach Dinant in the beautiful Ardennes. The hotel tonight sits in its own parkland on the outskirts of Dinant – a lovely tranquil spot. Dinner with wine is included tonight.

Day 2. Saturday September 3. Dinant to Koblenz (approx. 160 miles).
Over the high forested Ardennes and into Germany and the Eifel hills. Onwards to Koblenz, where the Mosel and Rhine meet and our 4 star city centre hotel is situated on the Rhine. Dinner with wine is included tonight.

Day 3. Sunday September 4. Koblenz to Wurzburg (approx. 150 miles).
This morning we follow the Rhine, past the Loreley and into Rodesheim with its crooked narrow streets and half-timbered houses. We continue through the hilly countryside until we arrive in Wurzburg and our hotel for the night. You are free to eat out tonight.

Day 4. Monday September 5. Wurzburg to Ingolstadt (approx. 125 miles).
More sweepy, cross country roads into Bavaria and to Ingolstadt – proudly standing on the river Danube. With it medieval centre, Ingolstadt has many claims to fame including having one of the oldest Universities in Germany, being the home of Shelley’s Frankenstein and the giant AUDI car plant where a visit has been arranged. Dinner with wine at the AUDI forum is included tonight

Day 5. Tuesday September 6. Ingolstadt to Salzburg (approx. 140 miles).
South towards Munich and a stop at Daccau, Germany’s first concentration camp. Although the huts have long gone the gas chambers and watchtowers still remain. West from here and onto Salzburg and your city centre hotel for the next two nights. Tonight you are free to eat out.

Day 6. Wednesday September 7. Salzburg. A day off to explore Salzburg – with its alleyways, old squares and churches – the home of Mozart is quintessentially Austrian. Tonight you are free to eat out.

Day 7. Thursday September 8. Salzburg to Faaker See (approx. 140 miles).
One of our first stops of the day is at the summer home of Adolf Hitler in Berghof. Then over the mountain pass and south to Ossiach and your hotel for the next three nights. The Castle Hotel sits on the edge of a lake and is only 12 miles from the hub of the Faaker See rally. Dinner with wine is included tonight.

Day 8. Friday September 9. A free day so you can go to the rally and you are free to eat out tonight.

Day 9. Saturday September 10. A free day so you can go to the rally or join the famous lake ride. Once again you are free to eat out.

Day 10. Sunday September 11. Faaker See to Kitzbühel (approx 150 miles).
We start our return journey leaving behind this pretty area of Austria. Through the valley and over the mountains using the Felbert Tunnel or Europe’s highest road pass – the Grossglockner (weather permitting) – and onto Kitzbhuel. Your stay tonight is in the 4 star Sporthotel in the centre of this famous ski resort. Dinner with wine is included tonight.

Day 11. Monday September 12. Kitzbühel to Ulm (approx 200 miles).
As we cross back into Germany we ride through the lush green mountains on the sweeping roads of the Alpenstrasse. Tonight we stay in Ulm, the birthplace of Albert Einstein and the home of the tallest church spire in the world. Dinner with wine is included tonight.

Day 12. Tuesday September 13. Ulm to Saarbrucken (approx. 210 miles).
From here it’s back to the Black Forest, over the Rhine and then north. Cutting through the heavily forested region of France known as the northern Vosges (where the Maginot line once stood) we then cross back into Germany and on to the centre of Saarbrucken where your hotel is ideally placed in the heart of the city. Tonight you are free to eat out.

Day 13. Wednesday September 14. Saarbrucken to Chamouille (approx. 190 miles).
Leaving Saarbrucken we head back into France, towards the WWI killing fields of Verdun and then onwards to our final nights stay at our lakeside hotel in the lovely Chemin des Dames region of Picardy. The hotel stands on the edge of a large lake and every room has a balcony or patio overlooking it. Dinner with wine is included tonight.

Day 14. Thursday September 15. Chamouille to Calais (approx 160 miles).
Motorway and main roads today to get us back to Calais in time for a late afternoon crossing back to Dover.

Total tour mileage approx. 1,815 (not including any mileage whilst at the rally)
